This is what I’m supposed to F.E.A.R.?
I just finished F.E.A.R. and I’m glad I did. What a pile of crap. This game has gotten so many accolades that I figured there was no way it could possibly suck. How wrong I was. It’s short, incredibly repetitive, has no boss battles, and has a really stupid plot that you’ll be able to figure out from the very beginning. I can’t tell you how sick I was of shooting the same damn bad guys over and over again while running through incredibly linear office buildings. It also has one of the most unsatisfying conclusions to a game I’ve ever played. Worse, it wasn’t even scary, which was part of the selling point of the game. Great sound fx and pretty much nothing else.

I found it to be more unsettling than scary, I think that the no boss thing actually helped with that slightly, since you’re just unsure. I found the game to be enjoyable and the atmosphere was very very fun, the unsettling feelings lent it to being more scary than if it WAS scary.
I thought it was very well done, though, as you said it’s pretty linear. I bought the expansion but it’s pretty much like the first game. Good game, but 0 replay value. I thought that the game was visually very impressive (keep in mind that the game is now almost three years old) and the audio was *perfect*!

F.E.A.R. got so popular mainly because A: It’s pretty and B: Explosions. Just like you said, its repetitive, and sadly not scary.

The game is just so hollow. There’s no substance to it at all. As for boss battles, I kind of look forward to those in a game. I don’t want to spend 10 hours shooting the same generic commandos over and over only for the game to suddenly “end”.
I thought Doom 3 was far creepier than this mess of a game.

I think “mess of a game” and “pile of crap” is a bit harsh. It’s not a great game, however it’s an enjoyable experience. I think it can get repetitive but the creepy atmosphere and the fact that any moment you could just be overwhelmed by a ton of enemies made the game a tense experience at times. You’re right about Doom 3 being a better more frightening experience but F.E.A.R. is no where near as bad as you want it to be.
Boss battles in an FPS have to be done just right. I think most of the time they are just ridiculous and take you completely out of the experience. Most the time I find it completely unnecessary .
Most importantly, at least someone is doing something a little different with an FPS. Just be glad it’s not yet another WW2 shooter.
If I were to rate it I’d probably give it a 5.5/10.

I do feel compelled to say that I found Doom 3 annoying. It was scary but it wasn’t really scary. I have a problem with games that depend upon the shock value for scares… and the dumb AI in Doom3 pretty much made that the only scary part there.
Also, in F.E.A.R. there’s quite a bit of the storyline that you won’t get unless you’re examining everything in the game carefully, finding computers and phones and things, that picked up enough of the slack for me to give it something like a 7/10.
