I Am So-So
December 16th, 2007 by Jeff

My little bro Nate and I went to see I Am Legend tonight. My wife was a little bummed that I went without her, but now that I’ve seen it I think I did her a favor. This movie just isn’t that great. The middling reviews it’s been getting tell the tale: awful CGI monsters and an unsatisfying ending diminish what starts out as a promising take on Matheson’s classic novel.
Anecdotally, I think it will have a good opening weekend because here in Lincoln the theater was packed for the late showing, and we even had to drive across town to a different theater because the first one we tried was sold out.

I’m sure most people reading this know that Last Man on Earth starring Vincent Price is one of my favorite movies ever. I am Legend is such an enormous disappointment. It probably hits me even more considering I’ve been anticipating this as my movie of the year.
Sad, but true

It doesn’t help that they were doing reshoots as of last month. Reshoots are always a bad sign.

I generally wouldn’t say “don’t see it” to anyone about most movies, because different people will like different things… but, yeah, I would say you can easily skip IAL and check it out on DVD if you’re still interested at that point.

Lets get to the heart and soul of the matter here, when Jeff…JEFF of all people says you can easily skip seeing this one, you know they did something wrong.

I didn’t like the ending, and I agree about the bad CGI, but I still liked it pretty well. Natalie’s obsessed with Vincent Price, particularly Last Man on Earth, and she seemed pretty pleased with it. We were discussing it as a sort of extended political metaphor, following comments from a reviewer on NPR. But then, maybe the thing for me was just that it was a nice, snowy day, and we walked up to the theater and watched a movie and it was a pleasant day. I thought Will Smith was good, and they didn’t make him “cute” the way I expected so much as they made him crazy and sad.

My god, this movie is nowhere in the same league as Last Man on Earth.
Not. Even. Close.

Ok, but what about The Omega Man
MaT said:
The Omega Man sucks. It does have some strange underlying themes on race that are interesting to think about.

None of them are as great as Outpost Doom will be.
(now I’ve set a standard for us)

I am a huge fan of the book so I didn’t have my hopes high on this one. I will say that I was with the movie as sort of a seperate entity up until the woman and the boy. Everything before that I was okay with. I thought Will Smith did a great job of being the only actor on the screen. Carrying a movie like that is not easy. But he did a pretty good job. But then the woman and boy show up and things go down hill for me. A speech about Bob Marley? Come on. And then the end just sucked. So I would say it’s not a good adaptation of the book but that it’s an okay movie.
