The Blaxploitation movement from 1970-75 is extremely important, as it challenges these very stereotypes you speak of. The first film of this movement was Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970). But Blacula itself is a landmark in the black horror genre, if one can be said to exist. Also, there are interesting publications available that trace how blacks have been represented historically through poster art; this would be extremely fascinating. Check out Imagining Blackness: Race and Racial Representation in Film Poster and Art (Roberta Di Carmine). And of course Night of the Living Dead is monumental, especially with respect to black representation in horror films. I hope this project turned out well. It's a great idea.
