Women of Horror #62: Rhonda Shear

Oddly, Rhonda Shear didn’t star in anything that could really be called “horror” (maybe Frogtown 2?). She did a bunch of sci-fi flicks and comedies, but every horny, pre-pubescent horror fan that grew up in the 80’s has a soft spot in their hearts for Rhonda due to her hosting duties on USA’s Up All Night…which introduced so many of us to low-budget awesomeness. Everybody reading this has an “I-snuck-out-of-my-room-when-my-parents-were-sleeping-to-watch-Rhonda-Shear” story they can tell. Mine involves Chopping Mall.

Can someone explain to me why there is no more Up All Night or Monster Vision? Bah!

  • Ahh, the first woman I stayed UP! all night with watching horror movies. She was born in New Orleans so she would always order king cakes during Mardi Gras from the bakery I worked at. I loved taking her orders. ;)

  • Which one was Monster Vision? Tell me it was the one on USA with the really trippy intro with Freddy and the others on the walls as you go through some crazy tunnel to the end wall where the movie starts?

    That made sense to me.

  • MonsterVision came on TNT and was hosted by Joe Bob Briggs.

  • I heard she had a degree from harvard or something. I miss surprisingly a lot of USA in the 80s and 90s. I used to start the mornings with Cartoon Express and finish my weekend nights with Gilbert and Rhonda UP all night, or up awl night depending on who was saying it.

In the 90s USA had Duckman and the Wierd Science TV Series. And some other barely memorable stuff that was still kinda funny. Campus Cops? Son of the Beach? Oh childhood insomnia, you’ve served me well.

  • Yeah, what happened to USA? All that stuff used to be awesome!

I think the closest thing we have to a weekly horror show is AMC’s “fear friday” where they usually play a couple horror flicks on Friday nights. There’s no fun host like Rhonda or Joe Bobb, though.

  • dude i mss her and joe bob…..=( damn USA blows now and amc hardly ever shows many good flicks they always play Halloween nothing wrong with that but damn variety is nice….and they should put them on there as host…..ah I’m just bitching now though.

  • I always got so excited when they played The Toxic Avenger…I’d love to watch that now…

“Oh Julie, you’re so soft and sweet…Julie”

    lol

  • wow that brought back two memories …her and chopping mall, wonder if thats on DVD?
