So can I stop paying my mortgage yet?

…or what’s the deal with that? I want someone to come “bail me out” already. Free up my finances so I can go snag that 25th Anniversary Redneck Zombies DVD that’s coming out. Times are tight, yo.

My apologies to anyone who’s not interested in this sort of writing, but I sort of feel compelled to make response posts to some of Mat’s political commentaries. We actually both have our own personal blogs (SameOldSchmidt & The Stygian Hollows, respectively) that might be better-suited for these posts, but neither of us have updated those sites in quite some time. Not to mention that Mat & I are probably the only people who ever read those sites anyway.

I guess I should assume that most of our readers/listeners actually do fall more in line with Mat’s point of view on political issues. Horror is something of a “counter-culture” thing, after all. Shakin’ up the squares and whatnot. Just off the top of my head, I’d wager that most horror fans do skew liberal.

Personally, I’m a conservative/libertarian. That may make me a minority within horror fandom. On the off-chance that some like-minded folks are fans of our site or our podcast, I just want to say: Hey, how’s it goin’? I’m with you. We’re not all ultra-leftists here at Dead Lantern.

I think the way it pans out is: Mat’s left, I’m right, Steve’s indifferent and Deejay’s insane.

Moving on… I like the way Dead Lantern has evolved over the past couple of years. Initially I think we intended to be a news & reviews site, but we’ve moved away from that (why try to carbon-copy Arrow or Dread Central, right?) into more of “our own thing” with the Splattercast and the commentary posts and the film projects. I recoil at first, but then I think: There’s really no reason why Mat or I, or Steve, etc shouldn’t post non-horror commentaries and other random blog stuff. It’s not like we’re going to run out of blog space, right? I have to think that non-horror updates are better than no updates at all.

So what am I even talking about here? I dunno… I guess I’m just getting my arms around what our site is becoming – and again, I don’t think the changes are negative; I’m not saying that, but it is becoming different.

Would it be good to redesign our layout a bit? Should we maybe move away from our homegrown reviews database and just post reviews in the main blog? Stuff like that, design stuff, how this all fits together… Should we rethink our visual layout? The red/black and blood spatter makes you think “horror site” but maybe we could tailor things a bit differently to reflect our evolution?

I welcome & appreciate everybody’s feedback! We have an awesome group of readers/listeners.

Personally I like having the reviews as an archive the way it is now, that way Dead Lantern has a database of commentary and opinions on individual horror films, and anyone who is a fan of the site is going to want to know what the people here think of certain films. If they’re posted on the blog, seeking them out in the long term will be a chore. I like it just the way it is.

I like the site the way it is, but shaking up the layout a bit couldn’t hurt. It always helps to shake things up and keep your readers interested visually.

PS: MaT, where is my Mother of Tears review? ;)

Democrats tend to be the ones all about censoring the arts, putting labels on our videos games and music and such…republicans tend to preach BS, try to strike figures of power on God’s side and against this and that, but ultimately are “for show” hypocrites

I’m sure there are politicians on both sides that would like to irk horror fans by pulling a China ban or something.

In the past I would say I am more akin to Jeff in my political views, but then again as a a kid I wanted to grow up to be JR off of Dallas. (Ross Perot gave up too easily) These days I plan to just skate by trying to avoid letting any of it directly affect me, but always reserving the gumption to revolt if necessary.

Who do I want for prez? Me…that’s not going to happen anytime soon, so screw it all.

I think you’re overreacting. The only reason politics is being brought up is because of the election. In a month we’ll be back to our once a week updates :)

I hope you guys do not deviate from the blogs and commentaries that make this site different. Dead Lantern has quickly become a favorite site of mine because it is not the same old BS.

When you guys reach outside of horror, it reminds me that there are intelligent and well-rounded horror fans out there, and we are not all the cliche you picture while visiting horror sites. We can be huge fans, while having outside lives, enjoying sports, politics, and other types of entertainment. We are not a bunch of “Spooky Dans”.

Do we need more people reporting the same news? Or do we need more great opinions? I think it is the latter. We have a newsblog on our website, and I enjoy the articles and opinions far more than the “news”. There are others that simply like reading about upcoming flicks and such, so we do try to accomodate them, but frankly, there are ten other sites where people could get that info if they wanted it. I would hate to see Dead Lantern become another clone.

You guys have some talented people here, and I think it would be a tragedy to try to conform to the horror ideal and lose the identity of this place.

    Mat: “I think you’re overreacting.”

    I think your mom’s overreacting :D

Actually I’m shedding a bit of seriousness here, in a way. See, I used to have a filter where I was like “Some things belong here, other things probably don’t.”

You’ve shown me that we don’t need that sort of filter. We can post other stuff, anything we like, and it might actually make the site better and more interesting. I’m the first to admit: I’ve done a poor job of making frequent front-page updates. Maybe with this revised notion of what can be on the front page, I’ll be motivated to post more often.

Jeff, didn’t you get the memo? This is a “Change” year.

You’ve caught Obama fever and you don’t even know it! :)
