Dead Lantern Declares War on Switzerland!

Looks like the Swiss secretly support the Bush Doctrine and did a pre-emptive strike on Dead Lantern Nation this afternoon, knocking our site out of commission for a while.
We hereby declare war on the pansy asses in Switzerland.

Yeah, it was a weird thing.
Over a year ago Mat made a blog post about the TV show Dexter and he had an image in the post. No big deal, it’s good to put images in the posts.
But, for whatever reason, a ton of sites were hotlinking that particular Dexter image from our site. I guess it just popped up at the top of people’s search results or whatever. Mat mentioned it in a blog post a few weeks ago.
The hotlinkers annoyed me a bit but I figured it wasn’t that big of a deal in this day and age of fat bandwidth pipes. We rarely brush up against our hosting limits on bandwidth.
Well, today some site with a “.ch” domain (Switzerland) was absolutely hammering that image. Like hitting it in an infinite loop or something and the server couldn’t handle it.
Our hosting company’s support guys were great (thanks, Kyle!) and helped me pin it down. And the webmaster of the Swiss site at the root of the problem was also very responsive and helpful when I e-mailed him. He took down the links and I’ve implemented some anti-hotlinking measures (with more to come) so I’m hoping we’re good now.
But yeah, that was a trip.
