Hosts: Jeff w/ appearances by Mat and Tina Fontaine
Category: Solo show
Format: News, Reviews, DVD Releases
Running Time: 55 min
Description
The first of the dreaded and infamous “Solo shows”. News this week includes lost footage from John Carpenter’s Halloween, Kevin Smith wants to do a horror movie, and George Romero talks Diary of the Dead. Jeff reviews Riki-Oh, which “is not a horror movie” and waxes poetic about the lost VHS mail order company Blackest Heart Media. Other reviews include Feed, Blood Tide, and the Ghost Rider comic book. This episode contains some production value with audio clips, new music, and a special guest appearance by Jeff’s mom and dad. Really. The must buy DVD of the week: Fraggle Rock. And Jeff admits how the Fraggles scared the crap out of him.
Films Reviewed
Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991) d. Ngai Kai Lam
- Jeff: A “solid” 7/10
- Jeff: 6.5/10
Blood Tide (1982) d. Richard Jeffries
- Mat: 4/10 “If I was in a better mood, 5 or 6/10″
Memorable Moments
- The first appearance of Tina Fontaine.
- The first “solo” Splattercast.
- The first mention of Cutting Moments, a film we would regularly revisit when talking extreme horror.
- The first non movie review, done by Jeff (Daniel Way’s Ghost rider comic; 6/10)
- The first use of a non-Deejay created opening theme; this one was put together by Jeff.
- The first use of an audio clip from a movie (Riki-Oh).
- A mention of “wacky” audio problems the week before which will become a big issue now that the Splattercast is no longer done live at Spooky McPhee’s haunted mansion.
- The first appearance of Jeff’s mom and dad as they re-enact the watermelon scene from Blood Tide.
Quotes
- Jeff: “Here to help us out with news is local Jefferson City celebrity morning news anchor from Smooth Jazz 88.9KJLU Tina Fontaine.”
Jeff: “The world infamous Splattercast.” - Jeff: “George Romero and Kevin Smith have new horror projects, yeah ok I’ll keep my eye on it but any but anytime these guys cut a fart it makes news, so, alright, whatever, I don’t want to be a Negative Nancy.”
- Jeff: “Yes, of course that’s the first thing they teach you at prison warden school, you have to be the best at Kung-Fu.”
- Jeff: “No thanks, I don’t want any of your eye mints.”
- Jeff: This movie is very gross (Feed) it’s not Cutting Moments gross, but it’s on the same side of the super grossness line as Cutting Moments.”
- Mat: “We couldn’t go two weeks without a Splattercast because we know how many fans we got out there now…we had to give you guys something.”
- Mat: “If there’s one thing I know about Darth Vader it’s that he’s a sex machine, or a machine at sex.”
- Mat: “The monster doesn’t take virgin sacrifices, no folks, does not take virgin sacrifices at all. Instead, he takes virgins, and what I mean by that, the monster screws virgins. That was a pretty interesting twist.”
- Mat on Blood Tide: “It reminded me of an extremely poor man’s Wicker Man only with Greek gods.”
- Mat: “That’s my job, to bring you obscure crappy, crappy movies by semi-famous B actors.”
- Jeff: “I’m just going to come out and admit it, I like that album (Limp Bizkit’s Three Dollar Bill, y’all).
- Jeff: “Something about the Fraggles and Fraggle Rock..just disturbed me and unsettled me.”
The run of solo shows came about primarily because of the implosion of Codename: ZSF. We were all sick of each other and getting together every week to watch a movie and do a podcast wasn’t something anyone wanted to do. We had a dilemma. We knew that our download numbers were pretty good. Enough to make us go “Maybe we shouldn’t kill this thing” when the idea of ending the Splattercast was brought up. We decided to compromise. We’d put out something each week and that something consisted of either Jeff and I “hosting” solo with some audio reviews/segments from the other guys spliced in. One small positive of the solo shows is that they allowed us to experiment with a bit of production. One thing we’ve always wanted on the cast is to use audio clips/music/etc. during the show and you get a bit of that with these shows. These upcoming episodes are easily the worst in the entire podography (Did I just create a new term? *trademarked*) and exist only because we felt we needed to give the people…something. I guess I had forgotten how close we came to aborting the Splattercast so early on. I remember definite discussions about it. I guess in a way, the solo shows “saved” the cast. If we hadn’t been so goddamned stubborn about putting something out, and doing so on a regular basis, quality be damned, the Splattercast would’ve probably gone the way of the dinosaur.
