Quick thoughts on the “big” upcoming horror flicks

Though this year has seen quite a few quality genre flicks, I can’t say I’ve been too terribly excited to see much horror this year. It’s not affecting just horror, but most films in general. This was the first year in a long time where there was no “I MUST GO” summer movie I was anticipating.  I don’t care about any of these superhero flicks, Harry Potter is something I’ve avoided for the past 10 years, and Transformers 3 only held interest because of the 3D technology. It’s just been one of those years that I don’t care about anything being released. But, of course, October is just around the corner and there’s always some big genre projects. Here’s some quick thoughts on some of the more anticipated horror films the community is itching to see.

Chillerama: The guys behind this comedy anthology are very enthusiastic. They know how to make someone excited for their movie. Unfortunately, their recent track records have been pretty weak. Adam Green is the big name here and I enjoy his work. Hatchet 2, though, was godawful. Tim Sullivan acted like a total dick at Texas Frightmare Weekend, then told everyone how amazing his latest movie was, then released 2001 Maniacs: Field of Screams, not only one of the worst films of last year (which also included Green’s Hatchet 2) but one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen ). Not just story wise, but film-making wise. It was an embarrassment. I like Joe Lynch’s enthusiasm for the genre and I hope his Knights of Badassdom turns out, well, badass. But the last film he did was 4 years ago and was a shitty Wrong Turn sequel. And Rifkin? Well, Rifkin has done nothing of note horror wise since some shitty low budget stuff in the early 90′s so pardon me if I’m not blown away by the name Rifkin above Chillerama. He wrote Small Soldiers, so I guess that’s something. Again, these guys are great at marketing. The Chillerama promo materials and “drive-in” atmosphere are fun. All these guys have a great love for the genre and I hope Chillerama turns out excellent. But their recent track records make me hesitant to get excited about this.

Final Destination 5: Sheesh. There are 5 of these movies? For some reason I never think there are that many. Part 4 was bad but had some fun 3D sequences in it. This one is also being shot in 3D, not post-converted. I love how trailers are now promoting the fact that the movies are “Shot in 3D” (Shouldn’t have burned people, Hollywood). This series is Saw-like in that it’s only as good as its setups. I mean, it’s literally the same story every time. The only reason people watch the sequels is to see the elaborate Mouse Trap-esque ways in which Death goes about knocking people off. The laser eye surgery opening of the trailer looks promising. The acupuncture finale looks retarded. I’d guess that Jeff would go see this so maybe if he gives a positive report on it I might check it out.

Fright Night: I just don’t care. Though it was funny when Colin Farrell basically said it sucked before then realizing he was doing press and that he’s contractually obligated to tell everyone how awesome it’s going to be and retracted his statement. I like the original film just fine but it was never one of those “OH MY GOD I WORSHIP THIS MOVIE” kind of things. I think I’ve seen it twice. Just not interested in seeing the remake. I’ll probably catch it on DVD sometime.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark: This movie looks beautiful. I will certainly be seeing this in the theater and the fact that Guillermo del Toro’s name is on it gives it a genuine stamp of quality. He’s one of the rare filmmakers out there whose producer credit means something to me. Even if I don’t care for some of the films (The Orphanage, comes to mind) they are always well produced, well designed films.

Apollo 18: A found footage NASA  monster/ghost/whatever film set on the moon? I’m sold. Trailer looks rad but it doesn’t scream “creepy” enough to me. But it’s tough to go wrong with space horror. I’m hoping this one gets me like Paranormal Activity did. Speaking of which….

Paranormal Activity 3: Yes, I’ll see this. Part 2 was a pretty big drop in quality from the first but it still had a bunch of effective sequences in it. This film is a prequel that shows exactly what was going on with the sisters when they were kids in the 80′s. One major problem: I already know how this story ends. And what scares me more than the demons is the fact that this one is being made by the hacks who made Catfish, an absolutely horrible piece of shit movie. But I’m a sucker for ghost flicks and even though the trailer ain’t great, the residual effect from the first movie still gives me goosebumps when the paranormal stuff starts. I will see it opening weekend, but I have no faith it will be any good.

The Thing: Carpenter’s original is one of the most beloved films in the genre. It’s literally one of the best horror movies ever made. There will be no way this movie can live up to that one, but hopefully it can be entertaining without using CG. I doubt it, but I’m hoping for the best. The trailer was alright but felt more like they put it together to homage Carpenter instead of doing a new vision on the same basic story. Still, it didn’t make me not want to see it, so it did its job. I’ll see this opening night just because.

Red State: I will not see this in the theater but I’ll eventually check it out on DVD only because Brady recommended I might like it. Otherwise this film would stand proudly next to Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2 as films I will never, ever see.

Geez, come to think of it, these movies don’t seem that “big” to me. Probably The Thing and that’s about it. Meh year for movies.

Cold Case Cinema 15: Tarzan the Fearless!

Last week we watched what we thought was the best film we’ve seen so far for the show, THE BLACK BOOK. Leave it to Bryan to pick the film that is undoubtedly the worst so far! We cover TARZAN THE FEARLESS, part of TCM’s Arab Images on Film coverage. It’s a horrible chop shopped serial that makes zero sense. I believe this is the first episode where all three of us just rant against a movie. Hopefully it will be the last!

Check the CCC webpage for the full listing of all upcoming episodes.

SLEEP TIGHT Footage!

As those of you who listen to the Splattercast know, we’re working on a monthly film project called Shivers Down Your Spine. The first installment premieres on October 31st and is called DEADBOLT. A couple weeks back we shot the 2nd episode which is called SLEEP TIGHT starring Uncle Randy of Drunken Zombie. Well, to prove to all of you that we did indeed shoot for 6 hours, I’ve decided to post some footage.

This is a rough cut of the opening scene in the truest sense of the term. We have some insert shots we’ll be putting in and possibly altering the color of the footage and I’ve gotta tighten up the editing quite a bit. We also haven’t touched the audio yet (for example, gotta have some elevator muzak in there!) but I wanted to give the fans a small taste of the project we worked on. You’ll see the full version in November.

Next month we’ll be shooting CONVENTION GIRL at Flashback Weekend which I’m very excited for. And September sees us filming both DEADBOLT and BAIT. It’s gonna be a jam packed couple of months for us but hopefully you’ll dig the series!

Thanks for supporting our shit!
