I know nobody gives a shit about this, but when I find stuff that the Splattercast guys were involved with floating around the internet, I want to post it here for posterity. Because we all know Deadlantern.com will be here until the world ends in 2012. I’m trying to convince the rest of the guys to do a reunion show. I think Deejay, Brady, and I will be jamming in a couple weeks. Maybe come up with some new stuff. We’ll see what happens.
Anyway, this was an interview done by Tery Daly for a local band website called Star City Scene in July of 2004. It’s still posted but I’ll include it after the jump as well. You know, for posterity.
Bear Eats Fish was a band originally called Thieving Winona (this demo was actually recorded when we were still named that). It consisted of Deejay on drums, Brady on bass, myself on guitar, and Jefferson Gustav (the janitor ghost in TGH, Leon in OD) on vocals. The novelty of the band was that all of us were playing instruments we’d never played before with Jefferson never having done any lead singing. We had a decent following in our heyday, thanks to our lead singer who has amazing stage presence. Anyway, we recorded a short five song demo in the basement of Deejay’s house. All vocals are written and performed by Jefferson Gustav and all music was written by various band members. I present it here, in full, for the DL audience. Convince us to get back together
Deejay, Brady, Spooky, and I performing “Dumbass” at the KRNU studios circa 2001.
If you watch closely, you’ll see me lose my drumstick, a reaction of sheer horror cross my face, amazement when I catch it, Brady realizing that a disaster on live radio almost occurred, and me thanking the music gods that I was able to somehow pluck it out of the air and continue without missing a beat. There is a better quality version on our vimeo page but as of this writing (3 a.m.) it’s gonna be another hour or two before vimeo posts it.
Many of you are forced against your will to listen to T.J. whine about his tough life as a Hollywood graphic designer every week on the Splattercast. Now that he is hobnobbing with all of his elitist friends I’m sure they’ll love to check out what he was designing in the early days. What you have here is an Evil Dead II inspired flyer for yet another show at the legendary “Cellar” in Aurora, Nebraska. Int0vert was T.J.’s band, but as you can see, they were relegated to the opening act of the headliner: The Hot Carls.
Next time T.J. is in Nebraska, I’m going to have him autograph this.
We here at Dead Lantern and the Splattercast haven’t always dabbled in the darker arts of filmmaking, blogging, and podcasting. No, sir. We used to play in bands. Attempting to explain the history of those bands is better suited to someone with far more time and patience than I have. As you can tell, we were shitty pop punk. If you aren’t repulsed, there may be more goodies where this came from…
The video is taken from a live performance at the UNL radio station where Jeff’s wife Tina (who you heard on the latest Splattercast) was the disc jockey…or something This is footage taken by some local videographer doing a public access show called “Freakout” that aired on February 8th, 2001.
That obnoxious guy with hair (believe it or not) playing guitar is Deejay. The striking fellow playing the bass is Spooky McPhee. The strapping lad doing backup vocals is Braden. The geek playing the drums is I.
For those of you who despise Youtube and its crappy compression, you can also view this video in “better” quality on Vimeo.
