New leak/tease image from upcoming MTG set

Check out this dramatic image from next spring’s large MTG set, believed to be called Rise of the Eldrazi. Sorin Markov has quickly become a favorite character of mine so I’m interested to see him playing what appears to be a major role in the story.

I would wear the shit out of these

Sneaker enthusiast website Kix and the City has a bunch of photos of some new Transformers-themed shoes from Nike.

The Splattercast would sound great on these

Check out these silly-yet-awesome Thriller headphones.

The headphones, which won the Nokia headset design competition in 2008, feature gravestones, zombies and that creepy, yellow-eyed wolf bursting through the door. Though only one pair was made by Nokia into a working model, we hope that Jackson’s passing inspires Nokia to produce at least a limited-edition run of the freaky-awesome headphones.

Night of the crappy cover art

Suckage.

The horror sites are all crabby today about the newly unveiled covers for the upcoming Night of the Creeps DVD. I’ve seen the story all over the place, but I’ll go ahead and point you to Horrorphilia Podcast’s link ‘cuz they’re our homies. Apparently you can vote on which cover you like best, but that’s about as meaningful a choice as sifting through the catbox and deciding which particular turd you’d like to eat.

The original Creeps poster art is great, why not use it on the DVD cover? It reminds me of how, every once in a while, you’ll see some re-release of an Elm Street movie where they use a horrible photo collage instead of the breathtaking Matthew Peak poster art. All I can guess is that some marketing expert has data that says a more contemporary cover design would sell better on store shelves.

A while ago I wrote about my evolving feelings toward physical media. Coincidentally, this 1986 Fred Dekker film is one of the few movies I do want to go buy on DVD. Would I prefer to have better cover art? Yes, of course. However, it’s the content on the disc that matters most. So long as the DVD contains a quality transfer of Creeps, then I’ll be satisfied.

You might remember that the long-awaited DVD of Dekker’s other beloved 80s genre entry, The Monster Squad, also came out with a shitty, modernized cover. The content on the 2-disc set was pretty tits, though, so I let it slide. Also, for what it’s worth, there was an insert of the original poster art inside the case.

I recommend that everyone just chill out on this one. Yeah, it’s a bummer but it’s not like you were going to hang this DVD case on your wall, right?

Plugging my workplace…

I think I’ll start spending half the workday on this starting today. Suck it, unemployment.

New music project by David Lynch

davidlynch_162102bWhether you love Lynch’s work or you hate it, you have to admit that he is damn good at what he does. He makes you feel something, whether you know what that something is or not. Watching David Lynch create art through any medium, hearing him give the daily forecast, listening to him talk as he wiggles his fingers around trying to feel out the words he will use next; I’m fascinated by it all. I’ll always say that the man is masterful at everything he does and I’m so excited that he has found himself more involved with music these days.

Lynch’s new album, Fox Bat Strategy, is a tribute to Dave Jaurequi who passed away in 2006. Jaurequi was the guitarist for a band called Fox Bat who appeared in a couple of scenes in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Lynch says of Jarequi:

He was a guitarist, a fantastic one, but I asked him to sing and speak these lyrics of mine, because I had a hunch that proved correct: he had a great phrasing, and I love the grain of his voice… I think about him a lot, and wish we’d been able to record more than the seven songs that are on this album.

Listen to one of those seven songs and read more about the album here.

If you do happen to be a fan of this cool mother fucker, be sure to give Mashed in Plastic a listen. Also, the David Lynch Splattercast is definitely one of the Splattercast gems.

Fox Bat Strategy goes on sale June 30th.
