Deadpool Debacle

Fuck this shit.

Topless Robot has some heartbreaking info on the portrayal of Deadpool in the upcoming Wolverine movie. Say it ain’t so! Quoting their site (spoilers)…

• Ryan Reynolds shows up for 10 minutes in the beginning of the film. He’s part of Stryker’s team, and his mutant ability is mostly being a badass with swords, cutting bullets and the like. He is called Wade Wilson during this period.
• Stryker’s big plan (or one of ‘em) is to make Weapon XI, a mutant with a shit-ton of mutant powers.
• Stryker uses Wilson’s body as the mutant power receptacle, and because of the scarring (I’m not sure whether that’s from a previous fight, or as a result of all the mutant powers getting packed into him), Weapon XI is played by Scott Adkins. Weapon XI appears for about ten minutes near the film’s end, and has the claws seen above (a la Wolverine), Cyclops’ optic blast, Wraith’s teleportation ability, and Wolverine’s healing factor, too. Also, his mouth is indeed sewn shut.
• Just like Weapon X is given the name “Wolverine,” Weapon XI is given the name “Deadpool.”

So really, the only inaccuracies with the toys is that Hasbro is calling the Wade Wilson figure Deadpool too, although I can see why they’d rather put “Deadpool” on the packaging rather than “Wade.” So, guys… you can freak out and boycott Fox if you want, but please, stop pretending these are two separate characters. Now, it’s possible my source is inaccurate, but he’s given me ample evidence to believe him.

Mega disappointing. Deadpool is a big personal favorite of mine and it’s just a kick in the balls to see him treated this way. A comic-accurate Deadpool could carry his own feature film, easily. This take on the character, however, sounds like some fucking bullshit.

Could’ve been worse

I’ve expressed that the ending of the Watchmen movie disappointed me, but it could’ve been worse.

Hat-tip, Chris’s Invincible Super-Blog.

New Punisher: War Zone Stills

Latino Review has some new stills from Punisher: War Zone, which opens next Friday. I’m hearing a lot of people pre-dissing this flick but I’m keeping an open mind. I love the character (read the Ennis & Dillon issues!) and I enjoy B-grade comic/action movies. I did like Thomas Jane in the previous movie but I think Ray Stevenson looks fine in the trailers and pics that I’ve seen – plus, Jigsaw!

Kick-Ass (proper noun, not adjective) movie news

Anybody read any of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass comic? I know T-Rack mentioned in the forums that he was digging it. It’s a cool book, I definitely recommend it. With only a handful of issues out, it’s already being made into a movie. Here’s a new interview with Mark Strong about the project.

Marvel Zombies 3

Marvel Zombies #1 was great fun.

Marvel Zombies #2 was a huge disappointment.

Maybe Marvel Zombies #3 will make up for it!  So far it features zombie Deadpool and Zombie Morbius making the trip to Earth 616.  Yep, that’s right.  The zombies could actually have lasting, meaningful effects on the ‘real’ Marvel Universe this time.  But probably not.

Watchmen reporter Q&A

Here’s a nifty article about a press screening/Q&A for the upcoming Watchmen movie.

From the article:
Snyder said he had a meeting with the studio early on, where they shared their early “Hollywood” vision for the Watchmen movie. It would have been an updated George Bush-era film, where the Minutemen team had been hunting down terrorists. But Snyder’s love for Nixon’s Watchmen involvement brought him back to the table, asking Warner Brothers to trust him that 1985 is the right way to start the movie, and “maybe we should just leave it the way it is.”

Sounds like Snyder stuck up for the source material in the face of studio meddling, so kudos to him.

What I ‘Wanted’ was a faithful adaptation

I went to Wanted tonight with my brother. The theater was pretty full for the 6:45pm showing. The movie’s been getting pretty good reviews. If I had never heard of the comic book by Mark Millar & JG Jones, then I would probably have liked this movie a lot more. I’d call it a good, bloody, wacky summer action flick and would easily recommend it. It’s a fun shoot-em-up movie, in and of itself.

But I am a fan of the comic, and as an adaptation of Millar’s story this movie is piss-poor. Where is Mr. Rictus? Where are all the zany supervillains? Where’s all of the comic booky stuff? And Angelina Jolie as Fox? I mean, I don’t have anything against Angelina Jolie, but I think the role could have been better cast. Or at least give Angelina some ears to wear. I will say that I like the slightly tweaked final beat they do in the movie better than the final beat of the comic. I think Millar sort of jumped the shark with that last panel and the movie keeps the same basic spirit and makes it a smidge more personable… but I think I’m splitting hairs.

I’m conflicted. As I said: In and of itself, Wanted is a fine summer popcorn action flick. Fans of the comic, however, will be highly disappointed. No Mr. Rictus? Seriously?
