The Art of the Teaser Trailer?

We got an e-mail recently and one of the questions that was asked was “When is the Outpost Doom teaser trailer coming out?”

That’s a very good question. I’ve been working on it, but it just isn’t turning out to my satisfaction. See, I have a perfect ending (in my estimation), I just don’t have any creative ideas for a beginning and middle. I’m not quite sure what to do. Considering the fact that The Grand Horror is out on DVD and there still has never been a real trailer for it, you can probably surmise that my experience in trailer making is lacking, to say the least.

My question is, can anybody think of any interesting teaser trailers for horror films? I’m sure there are many out there, but I’m drawing a complete blank. I’m looking for some inspiration; a template of some kind. Or, if any of you guys and gals have any ideas of what you’d like to see in a teaser trailer, bounce some ideas off of me.

I’m stuck. So let’s brainstorm with each other, shall we?

Outpost Doom…the final weekend?

yes ladies and gentleman, the end is (hopefully) nigh.

After many long weekends of filming, we have reached the end of the line. Outpost Doom has just about finished principal photography (don’t we sound professional?). The film is just about in the can. Soon we can return to our normal, boring lives.

Of course, I say this and we’ll probably not get everything finished, but I feel like being dramatic. This weekend we have a bunch of scenes to do, but only about 3 with dialog. The rest is just FX stuff and pickup shots.  We’ve been editing as we go along and we’ve got over a third of it in rough cut form. I plan on getting the rough cut finished before school starts in a few weeks. From there, we’re going to force Deejay down for a few more weekends so we can work on all of the music and sound fx. That should be fun. With any luck, the entire thing will be done by the end of this year. Imagine that; not having to wait 2 years to see it as was the case with TGH!

So here is hoping that nothing stupid happens this weekend and we can finish the damn thing. We want to thank everyone who has shown support and interest. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the improvement in quality over TGH.

Stay tuned for more goodies from Outpost Doom (where’s that teaser trailer at?…)

Video Journal #3 is now posted and ready for your viewing consumption.

Outpost Doom: coming along…

There is a light at the end of our long, dark tunnel. Outpost Doom is nearing completion. We still have a fair ways to go (a few more weekends yet) but I think we’ve finally reached that point where we recognize all this hard work is about to pay off. We’re almost done.

I’ve uploaded the media forum thread with some new pics from this past weekend. Look for more very soon….including a possible teaser trailer…

Deadlantern.com Presents: Adventures in Filmmaking #2

On any indie film, problems will arise. The real talent lies in being able to make adjustments on the fly, no matter how ridiculous they may seem on the face of it, and soldiering on. As you will soon see, not even the lack of a real, living female will stop us here at Deadlantern.com

We give you: The Barn Tranny.

Outpost Doom: Video Journal #2

Deejay says “Watch the second Outpost Doom video journal“.

And stay tuned for the Deadlantern.com’s Adventures in Filmmaking: Tranny Terror!

uploading as we speak…

Back from the Abyss

Outpost Doom had fallen precipitously behind schedule the past couple weekends. Miraculously, we’re all caught up after having a productive weekend which oddly felt as if we didn’t do anything at all. We even got some FX stuff done.

I’m going through behind the scens footage right now and I think Spooky is going to have some photos from the past couple weekends up later this week. Production Blog to be updated later tonight.

Dread Central pimps Outpost Doom

Fresh off our news article on Fangoria.com, a friend on Myspace sent a message congratulating us on being on Dread Central. So I went searching. And I found it. You can check out our Dread Central newsburb right here.

Even nicer was the kind words by poster “Syxx”:

This year alone I’ve seen about 25 unknown features … and only a couple have been worth my time. The Grand Horror was one of those very few bright stars.

That’s awfully nice. Our thanks go out to Dread Central for posting our video journal and keeping the horror masses up to date on Outpost Doom.

Meet Deadlantern.com’s new mascot (and name him/her)….

See that badass owl in the picture to the left? That would be Deadlantern.com’s new official mascot. You’re probably asking yourself why a fake plastic owl would even be horrifying enough to warrant this special honor. After all, Steve was probably still holding out hope that the Carnosaur would be our mascot…

For the full story as to why we love our “Garden Defense Owl” you’ll have to wait for the behind the scenes footage I’m putting together, but long story short, this owl protected us from a couple dozen Barn Swallows this weekend and we’ve decided to officially make our protective owl charm our mascot.

Here’s where you guys come in: we need a name for it! A male or female name doesn’t matter, just as long as it is as badass as the owl itself. If you’ve got a great name for our new mascot (you’ll be seeing this owl popping up in all of our video projects from now on) then send us an e-mail at splattercast@deadlantern.com or post a reply to this blog entry.

At some point we’ll read all the submissions on the Splattercast and choose a fitting handle for our faithful bodyguard. Can’t wait to hear what you guys come up with!

p.s. Spooky McPhee documented our first weekend with some great pics that you can view here as did Brady which you can view here. Video production journal should be up in a couple days (I just remembered I have a summer class that starts tomorrow morning bright and early. doh!)

Outpost Doom begins…

As many of you know by now, we are making another film this summer called “Outpost Doom”. We’ll begin our first day of filming later tonight in what is going to be an all-summer shoot. You can expect weekly short video diaries chronicling the exploits and adventures of bad filmmakers making bad movies. It should be fun.

But if you just can’t wait for the video diaries, you can always read the Production Blog thread on our forum for more continual updates on our shenanigans.

So begins the long slog that is “Outpost Doom”…
