 Re: What are you reading?
I wish I had time for fun reading but I'm in grad school trying to get my teaching certificate for teaching 7-12th grade English. It's a program where I'm using Master's level courses to get the cert so I'm working towards the cert and Master's at the same time.
Anyway, right now I have a class entitled, "Teaching Adolescent Literature." Basically my reading right now is young adult novels. Some I've read in the past and others I've never touched. This week alone I read:
Speak The Outsiders The Pigman Make Lemonade Killing Mr. Griffin The House on Mango Street
Next on the reading list are The Lovely Bones and Twilight. Not really looking forward to either of those. More the former than the latter though.

If so, I read the first book but never went any further. I liked it okay, but I'm just bored of all the same old fantasy tropes. There are not many out there willing to step into what I think is the most noble and yet underrated professions one can pursue. I tip my hat to you.

 Re: What are you reading?
GHOST ROAD BLUES by Johnathan Maberry.
Wow! Just started this last night, but I'm already like a catfish that gobble a hot dog on a hook. This puppy is good. No wonder it won the "STOKER" award for best first novel a few years ago.
When I was out and about today, I went ahead and picked up the two sequels Dead Man's Song and Bad Moon Rising. Can't wait to get to Bad Moon Rising; evidently it features several horror icons including none other than Joe Bob Briggs and Debbie Rochon.

 Re: What are you reading?
Professor Bleak, are you a Joe Lansdale fan? I have an offer to interview him but I've only read a couple short stories. I do have Drive In 1 & 2, but have never read them. Anyway, I know you're a huge reader so if you're not shy and would be interested, maybe we could outsource this to you. They're offering copies of some new "Complete Drive-In" collection that we could give away. You can e-mail me: jeff@deadlantern.com or look for me in the IRC if you're interested. I don't know if Mr. Lansdale has Skype, though

 Re: What are you reading?
HOLY SHIT!!! This is what I get for letting my life get in the way of my passions...Joe R. Lansdale is my favorite writer of all time...no shit...I collect all of his works and would even read his toilet paper after he wiped his ass with it.
I'm going to send ya' an e-mail, but I'm sure this is much to late. FUCK!!! Plus, I don't know how good of an interview I could give.

 Re: What are you reading?
I'll reply to the guy who contacted me, and bcc you. (it's been a week or so)
Maybe prepare a list of questions you'd like to ask him, in case we do get it together?
Do you have Skype, bleak? It's a free download, and is what we always use for our podcast calls. I'm not sure if Mr. Lansdale will be familiar with it, so that's another element I'll have to hammer out. I believe I can set Skype up to call a person's phone.
My skype ID is jeffwschmidt by the way - although I'm usually only on it if I'm specifically planning a podcast call.

 Re: What are you reading?
I just wanted to give a shout out for a re-release of the really good John Skipp and Craig Spector novel The Bridge. I saw this in the bookstore this afternoon and was thrilled to see a novel by two of the founding members of the splatter-punk movement getting a re-issue.
The basic premise, which might sound a bit goofy but is handled with aplomb, is that illegal toxic dumping brings an ever-growing pile of trash to life as an almost sentient blob like creation intent on devouring the world.
This is not my favorite Skipp and Spector book, but with it's reprint The Light at the End, one of the three greatest vampire novels ever written, can't be far behind. If you've never read The Light at the End and like your Vampires to be mean, nasty and live in the sewers, then you should hunt down a copy and give it a try. It will blow your mind at how great a vampire novel can be. As a general rule, I've always avoid fang-fiction, but this book is so rock-n-roll, or punk as the case may be, I can't believe it's never been adapted to the big screen.
Oh, and speaking of film adaptations, as I was scanning through Netflix instant tonight, I found an adaptation of one of my other favorite Skipp and Spector novels, Animals. I never even knew this had been produced. I plan on giving it a watch in the next couple of days, but I don't hold out any hopes of it being a good film. Right now it has a 3 star rating on Netflix.

I read all but the last one, which is on my shelf in queue. No doubt Mr. Maberry can write his arse off. My only criticism would be that they're a little long for the plot, which is to say he does like to ramble a bit. But the guy loves horror and it shows. Met him once, too, and he was a real swell guy. If you like him, you'll love Sarah Langan.

 Re: What are you reading?
I just got a large book which is a collection of three horror novels that have been adapted into films: The Omen, Rosemary's Baby, and Salem's Lot. Just started reading the latter, and all the swearing is cut out!

 Re: What are you reading?
Well, since this thread got a bump and I don't have to go digging for it, here are the books I've read in this past month or so...
The Strain by Guillermo Del Toro & Chuck Hogan You can't read it without visualizing it as a Del Toro film, and that's a good thing. It's part of trilogy, with the 2nd volume due out this fall.
Blood & Thunder: The Life and Art of Robert E. Howard by Mark Finn A very well written and informative work. Combined with Howard's collected letters, this book is all one needs to get to know the very interesting creator of Conan.
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak This gets shelved in the young adult section of most book stores but is one of the best books I've ever read. It's the story of a little girl that steals books from Nazi book burnings, and told from the perspective of a watching angel. I can not recommend this strongly enough.
Fragment by Warren Fahy Giant insect monsters on an island eating people. This was a fast, fun read that read like a summer blockbuster. It's mostly just fluff, but a good summer read out by the pool.
The Magicians by Lev Grossman Less Than Zero meets Harry Potter. This is a very interesting look at what would really happen to kids if there was a Hogwarts or Narnia. It's full of sex, drugs and young adults being just that. A few people I've talked to, who have read it, hated it because it rips apart the whole fantasy escapism that they love; but that's the point.
The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi I just started this. It won the NEBULA for best novel this year, and after only a few chapters I can see why.

 Re: What are you reading?
Just picked up the complete Scott Pilgrim comic series now that the final book has been released. Powered through the first two issues last night. I can see that the hype was well deserved. Excited to see the movie and play the video game that are both scheduled for release next month.

 Re: What are you reading?
I received The Walking Dead volumes 1 and 2 for my birthday, so really want to get on those. Also need to read the X-Files/30 Days of Night crossover.
Regarding actual books, still on Salem's Lot, and about to start a collection of Asimov's robot stories.

The Minotaur Takes a Cigarette Break is boring as hell. The only thing keeping me going is that he might actually lose it and beat the shit out of some dumb humanoids.
