Nirvana

With the Lights Out Box Set

I was a bit scared when this box set first came out. I hadn't been hearing good things about it. I don't know what people are talking about it's great. Though it may come down to if you're a big fan of Nirvana or not. The quality isn't all that great at times but most of it is definatly listenable. I think a lot of people are forgetting that Nirvana started out as a punk band. So the shitty quality of a lot of the recordings and the less than perfect versions of songs make sense when you look at it from this angle. If you want polished, prettied up Nirvana music than this box set won't be for you.

The highlights of the cd would have to be the Leadbelly covers, A song called Sappy, and a lot of good acoustic versions of songs. Some of the Demo stuff is neat and there are a bunch of half finished songs where they were screwing around but there was potential for good songs to come out of them. The DVD is ok, it is mostly live performances. There is some pretty funny stuff with the band just screwing around. There are really good live versions of Smells Like Teen Spirit, Jesus Don't Want Me for a Sunbeam, and School. The DVD ends with the Kurt on drums and singing, Dave Grohl on Bass, and Krist Novoselic on guitar playing Seasons in the Sun which I still haven't decided if it's funny as hell or really sad.

The packaging is really cool too. The front has a metal picture of the band in suits that's neat looking. It folds out into thirds with discs one and two and the left, the book in the middle and disc three and the DVD on the right. The book may be the best part. It runs down the recording/performance history of the band with pictures put in between. A lot of the pictures are ones that haven't been printed before and are nice to look at. Thurston Moore's liner notes are really good as well.

Over all I would have to say this box set is just for hard core fans. I don't think a lot of people can put up with the loud, punk, crappy versions of stuff. However there are some really great songs on this box set.

7 / 10
